Geography, Travel and Cultures

Celebrate Geography Awareness Week [6] in November — and all year long! Do you know any kids who are fascinated by maps, the geography of the world, exploring their own town or city, or discovering other cultures? We've gathered up a great collection of books, activities, apps, and websites for learning all about geography, travel, and cultures.

Try pairing fiction with nonfiction books and exploring different genres [7] (like poetry and biographies) and formats (like graphic novels and audio books). You'll be creating your own "text sets" — collections of texts focused on a specific topic, such as geography, travel, and cultures. Reading widely in this way helps children build background knowledge [8], vocabulary [9], and comprehension skills.

You may also want to explore the writing, oral storytelling, poetry, mapmaking, and other creative activities featured in our guide, We Are Storytellers: Exploring Multicultural Folktales, Fairy Tales, and Myths [10].

Woman looking at a world map with a child.

How to explore this theme:

  • Read fiction and nonfiction books
  • Try some hands-on activities
  • Build writing skills with these fun ideas
  • Dig deeper with kid-friendly websites
  • Listen and learn with these podcasts especially for kids
  • Play and learn with mobile apps

More themed resources:

  • Growing Readers tip sheets (English & Spanish)
  • Video interviews with children’s authors

Born in 1876 on the Yankton Sioux reservation in South Dakota, Zitkala-Ša willingly left her home at age eight to go to a boarding school in Indiana. But she soon found herself caught between two worlds―white and Native American. Zitkala-Ša found joy in music classes and when she graduated, she became a music teacher, composer, and performer. Zitkala-Ša found she could also "sing" to help her people by writing stories and giving speeches. As an adult, she worked as an activist for Native American rights, seeking to build a bridge between cultures.

Peruvian archaeologist and national icon Julio C. Tello unearthed Peru's ancient cultures and fostered pride in the country's Indigenous history. Nothing scared Julio, not even the ancient human skulls he found. His bravery earned him the boyhood nickname Sharuko, which means brave in Quechua, the language of the Native people of Peru.

A roof, a door, some windows, a floor. All houses have them, but not all houses are alike. Some have wings (airplane homes), some have wheels (Romany vardoes), some float; some are made of straw, some of snow and ice. Everywhere people live, they adapt to their surroundings and create unique environments, using innovative techniques to provide that most basic of needs: shelter.

Folk tales tell us who we are.

Carmen Agra Deedy (Martina the Beautiful Cockroach) talks about why folktales matter so deeply. "They're meant to teach what that culture believes. And what's beautiful about them is that the really wonderful ones always have risen to the top and then travel the world."

  • Meet the Author

Cultural mirrors and windows. Most of Grace Lin's [365] books are about the Asian-American experience. Lin believes that "books erase bias, they make the uncommon everyday, and the mundane exotic. A book makes all cultures universal."
